1. Formal Definition
The Talent Drift Law states that suppressed talent migrates to alternate subfields, games, tools, ecosystems, informal networks, underground forms, adjacent domains, or future competitors.
Talent is not merely credentialed status. In UTS, talent is capacity that can produce coherent signal, solve problems, generate novelty, perceive structure, repair systems, build tools, coordinate fields, expose hidden debt, or create higher-order alternatives.
When legitimate pathways are open, talent can couple into the system and increase coherence.
When pathways are gated, captured, hostile, extractive, unauditable, status-bound, resource-starved, or incompatible, talent does not disappear. It decouples or is excluded, then migrates.
A dominant system may misread the absence of visible challengers as proof of security, quality, legitimacy, or superiority. But absence of challengers may indicate talent drift, not stability.
Suppressed talent reappears in other subfields, games, tools, ecosystems, adversarial spaces, parallel institutions, cultural forms, informal markets, underground networks, open-source projects, or future replacement basins.

5. When This Law Does Not Apply
This law should not be used to claim that every excluded node has equivalent talent or that all rejection is suppression.
Selection, standards, boundaries, and quality filters can be legitimate. Some candidates, ideas, tools, or contributions may not fit the field, may require development, may be unsafe, may be misaligned with scope, or may not yet meet the needed threshold.
This law applies when the system’s exclusion mechanism is structurally distorting, not when coherent selection occurs.
Coherent selection can reject participation when:
- criteria are clear;
- access requirements are relevant;
- feedback is auditable;
- appeal or re-entry pathways exist;
- boundaries are legitimate;
- safety constraints are real;
