1. Purpose

1.1 What This Arc Repairs

Truth and Causal Clarification repairs the loss of causal legibility after harm, instability, drift, or failure.

It applies when the system does not yet know, cannot yet prove, or is structurally avoiding:

  • what happened;
  • what caused it;
  • which layer the failure originated from;
  • who or what was affected;
  • which variables moved;
  • which claims are evidence-backed;
  • which narratives are substituting for truth;
  • which repair path is actually admissible.

This arc does not assign final responsibility by itself. It prepares the system for valid responsibility mapping and origin-layer repair by restoring enough truth structure for repair to become coherent.

It repairs the clarification state by:

  • restoring attention to the real failure geometry;
  • reconstructing context;
  • preserving evidence and uncertainty;
  • increasing auditability;
  • detecting inversion and narrative capture;
  • separating claim, symptom, cause, and effect;
  • making the failure traceable enough for repair assignment.

1.2 Core Restoration Function

This arc restores causal legibility by directing attention toward the real failure geometry, reconstructing context, increasing auditability, detecting inversion, and preserving uncertainty until the system can identify what failed, where it failed, and what repair must reach.

Truth and Causal Clarification is the canonical follow-on arc after emergency stabilization when the system is no longer actively cascading but does not yet have enough truth structure to repair safely.


2. Use Conditions

2.1 When to Apply

Use this arc when:

  • active harm has been slowed or contained enough for truth work to begin;
  • causality is unclear, suppressed, disputed, or fragmented;
  • multiple explanations compete without adequate auditability;
  • narrative certainty is high while evidence resolution is low;
  • a visible symptom is being mistaken for the origin layer;
  • responsibility is being compressed into blame or diffused into fog;
  • dashboards, metrics, policies, or appearances are substituting for field truth;
  • affected nodes cannot verify what happened;
  • repair is being proposed before the causal chain is understood;
  • the system is at risk of scapegoat repair, immunity repair failure, or procedural theater.

Examples:

  • an institution has contained a public incident but is already pushing a narrative;
  • an AI system misclassified a user, but the trigger path is opaque;
  • a security incident has stabilized, but the breach vector is unclear;
  • a governance process is assigning blame before causal trace exists;
  • a biological, economic, or social system is reacting to symptoms without identifying the failure layer;
  • a relationship or contract failure has generated conflicting accounts and unclear boundaries.

2.2 When Not to Apply

Do not apply this arc when:

  • active harm is still cascading and emergency stabilization is required first;
  • the system lacks any safe evidence-preservation channel;
  • truth work would expose affected nodes to new harm without protection;
  • the process is being used to delay obvious containment;
  • the system demands certainty before evidence can support it;
  • the inquiry structure is controlled by the same actor or mechanism that benefits from opacity;
  • clarification would become extraction from harmed nodes rather than restoration of legibility;
  • the system refuses to preserve uncertainty.

Truth and Causal Clarification must not become investigation theater.

The sequence may cycle through attention restoration, context reconstruction, and audit expansion multiple times before the causal chain becomes stable enough for repair assignment.
