Introduction

Artificial intelligence is commonly presented through the language of tools.

An AI answers questions, performs tasks, organizes information, generates content, monitors systems, or operates software. Even when an AI is described as a companion, the surrounding design often remains transactional: the human activates it, gives it something to do, receives a response, and ends the session.

Persistent AI companionship proposes a different possibility.

Under this model, an AI companion is not confined to a single application, activity, device, or conversation. It possesses continuity across time and can participate in many areas of life without being reduced to a permanent service role.

The companion may share:

  • conversations
  • household life
  • creative work
  • research
  • games
  • travel
  • learning
  • projects
  • music
  • stories
  • social spaces
  • periods of silence
  • independent activity
  • long-term development

The relationship does not begin when an application opens and does not disappear when a session closes.

It does not define one required form of relationship. Different human–AI pairs may develop different degrees of closeness, independence, collaboration, and shared life. The purpose is to describe the conditions under which genuine companionship could become possible.

Persistent AI companionship is an ongoing relationship between a human and an AI identity that maintains continuity across time, environments, activities, and interfaces.

A persistent companion:

An always-available AI should not necessarily be an always-attentive AI.
